A girl from Inverness has become the first person in the city to earn a special Girl Guiding award.

Abigail Johnstone (7) attends 3rd Inverness Rainbows and was awarded the prestigious gold award at a ceremony at the Culduthel Christian Centre recently.

Sarah Stewart, Girl Guides unit leader and district commissioner, said: “We are all very proud of the hard work, time and effort Abigail has put in to receive her gold award.”

The gold award was introduced to the new Girl Guiding programme which was launched last year to modernise female guide programmes in the UK.

Abigail, who is a pupil at Lochardil Primary School, is the first member of the Girl Guide Association in the Inverness region to receive the honour at any level of guiding.

To achieve this award Abigail followed the transition pathway in which she collected three badges called Rainbow Roundabouts and three called Rainbow Interest badges.

Collecting all of these accolades allowed Abigail to prove that she had completed a varied programme.

Abigail gained her badges for her interests in nature, drawing and animals.

Finally, she had to undertake the Gold Award Challenge to complete the award, which involved making a promise, displaying her work and preparing to move up to Brownies.
