BOXES of treats are being sent from Inverness to Afghanistan to soldiers from the 3 Scots regiment based at Fort George – who recently deployed to the war-torn country.

A ‘Treats for Troops’ initiative has been launched by Laura McCarthy, a partner in local solicitors Munro & Noble, whose husband James, a Company Sergeant Major, is now in Afghanistan.

“Staff and friends have been contributing the contents and we’ve already sent out 52 boxes and are on course to dispatch a further 60 or 70 boxes by the end of this week," said Laura McCarthy.

“I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of people who’ve made a real effort to donate to the guys in the local regiment who are serving in hostile territory.

“Unfortunately, whether it be due to their personal circumstances or differing family dynamics, a number of these soldiers deployed do not receive parcels from home during their operational tour.

“At Munro & Noble, we wanted to change that and it’s been wonderful to get such backing from employees and family members. We’re busy packing for the next Treats for Troops ‘airdrop’ in a few days’ time.”

Laura McCarthy added:”The boxes take four to six days to arrive there and we’ve already been told of a particularly enthusiastic response to the home baking of Fiona McIntosh, daughter of our practice manager Gordon. Her flapjacks and tray bakes have filled six boxes and have earned rave reviews.

“We’re not allowed to send aerosols or alcohol –apparently booze and bullets don’t mix! But the likes of toiletries, sweets, crisps, chocolate, rice pudding, toothpaste, Pot Noodles, magazines, puzzle books and travel games are warmly welcomed by the soldiers.

“Anyone who wishes to send something to pleasantly surprise our troops in Afghanistan can hand in donations to Munro & Noble Property Shop in Church Street, Inverness, or click on our Amazon wish list.”

The Amazon wish list can be found here.
