5 inspirational speakers heading to Inverness
A series of talks are being held in Inverness, starting next week, as part of an Inspiring People project led by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
Wildlife researcher Flo Blackbourn asks “Why Not Scotland?” after creating a feature-length documentary film as she embarked on an intensely personal journey around nature restoration projects and rewilded areas across Europe.
Concerned about the growing impact of climate change, she discovered places where nature was making a spectacular comeback. Encouraged by these stories, she was prompted to wonder, “Why not Scotland?”
Flo’s talk takes place on Monday, November 11, at 7.30pm at Inverness Royal Academy.
In December, Mark Wedgwood shares his rather unusual adventure – cycling 7300 miles across all 204 OS Landranger maps in the British Isles, in numerical order.
Inverness-based sea kayaker Ed Ley-Wilson looks at the deep sense of place and belonging when he recounts a significant paddling trip on the west coast. The story takes us beyond adventure and into wonder at the natural world.
His talk takes place in January and is followed the following month by Lawson Wood, who speaks of his “60 Years Underwater”. The diver and underwater photographer, whose youth was spent exploring rock pools, collecting shells on the beach and snorkelling along the coast, declared the UK’s first voluntary marine reserve, at Eyemouth, in 1975.
Finally, Tom Bowser explores the past, present and future of red kites in Scotland, and shares stories from the Argaty Red Kite project - asking whether these beautiful birds represent the UK’s greatest rewilding success. That event takes place on March 10.
