Inverness 18-year-old sped away from police while on scrambler

A teenager who illegally took a scrambler vehicle onto a public road and then sped off when police tried to stop him avoided a driving ban at Inverness Sheriff Court.

Landscaper Kieran MacIntosh, of Maclennan Crescent, Inverness appeared before Sheriff David Mackie and admitted driving carelessly and mounting a pavement in the Dalneigh area of the city on the afternoon of August 15 last year.

He was originally charged with dangerous driving which would have attracted an automatic disqualification of at least a year. The 18-year-old also pleaded guilty to driving an unregistered vehicle without a licence for that class and without insurance.

Fiscal depute Victoria Silver told the court that a police patrol saw MacIntosh in Dalneigh Road and activated their blue lights to have him stop. But the landscaper panicked and tried to evade the officers before coming to a halt near Lilac Grove.

Defending, John MacColl said: "He saw the police and got a fright. It was a course of driving of about three minutes and although it was at excessive speed for the streets involved which had a 20mph limit, I looked at dashcam footage and his speed was just over 30mph.

"It is hoped that this will be his one and only time in court."

Fining MacIntosh £470 and endorsing his licence with nine penalty points, Sheriff Mackie told him: "This was the result of poor decision making on your part."
