A Moray Skating Academy member from Inverness has won gold in a major national event.

Thirteen-year-old Jaya Beaton stormed to first place in her section at the Magnum Open in Stevenston, Ayrshire.

In a field of 16 skaters from all over Scotland, Jaya amassed an impressive 16.56 points, giving her a clear lead of three points.

The Millburn Academy pupil has only been skating for three years and previously won bronze in the same event last year.

In a separate competition, teammate Ellie Lasota gave a strong performance to take seventh place in the National 3 girls section. The 16 year-old Culloden Academy pupil successfully landed two axels in her routine.

Both skaters train with the Moray Skating Academy under coaching duo Sue Summers-Farrell and Graeme Summers-Campbell, and are working hard towards more success in their next national events.

Inverness Ice Centre provides learn to skate classes most Saturdays. The classes are approved by British Ice Skating and beginners of all ages and abilities, including complete beginners, are very welcome. The classes teach all the basics for progression into figure skating, ice hockey, ice dance and synchronised skating.
