The £11 million development of 118 affordable homes on the former Torvean Golf Course will now go ahead after it got the planning green light from Highland Council earlier today.

The applicant was the council itself but the local authority still had to go through the planning process – it is expected work will start at some point in the next financial year.

The work will take up to two years to complete and the first phase of work on 48 but there is no word yet on the later phases of the developments.

The application went smoothly after some concerns about flooding in one part of the site were resolved, effectively opening the door for councillors on the south planning application committee to agree for the homes to go ahead along General Booth Road.

This proposal also includes the usual landscaping, drainage and other ancillary works that go with large residential developments with a wide range of housing to be built.

There will in total be nine three-bedroom cottage flats, 30 two-bedroom cottage flats; six one-bedroom cottage flats; 28 two-bedroom houses; 39 three-bedroom houses; three four-bedroom houses and finally three five-bedroom houses.

The major sticking point has been the risk of flooding in one part of the development but that appears to have been dealt with after the council’s own flood team raised issues with it.

In the assessment of the council’s south area planning manager David Mudie said: “The proposal will bring forward much-needed affordable housing for Inverness.”
