Spring still seems a long way off as we endure another lockdown, with the mountains and more distant adventures out of reach once again.

This time it’s cold and we are all tired. It’s winter and the Covid crisis is putting a strain on the health service, as well as on our mental health.

We are regularly reminded that exercise is important to improving our mental health, but for those of us lucky enough to still be working, it’s not easy to find the time between deadline pressures and home schooling.

Boredom is definitely one thing that isn’t afflicting me personally in lockdown! But finding the time to get outside every day is the real test – including finding the motivation.

All the events I’ve pencilled in the diary, hoping 2021 would see a return to action, seem in doubt once again, and it’s not easy to maintain or improve fitness without goals.

I am managing to build up the running, slowly, while making sure I do at least a short walk or bike ride each day from the house.

Thankfully I’ve had the ice tyres on the bike, so the cold snap hasn’t stopped me enjoying getting out on two wheels. They seem to be able to deal with even the most perilous black ice, as well as giving a helping hand in deeper snow. It means you get some interesting looks from passers-by, who wonder how you’re staying upright!

I’ve been doing more running and walking than cycling, and taking my time when I’m out and about to try to get a breath of fresh air and appreciate the nature on my doorstep. Taking a closer look at the natural beauty of the Highlands is one of the things I love to do.

In the first lockdown, I found some pleasure in finding the array of spring flowers bursting into life in the woods close to home.

It’s not so easy this time, but the beautiful light of winter has some special sights for us all if we can find the time to look. From glorious red skies to tiny snow crystals, there is much to behold even while winter’s grip is upon us.

So, while the lockdown remains difficult for all of us, in all sorts of different ways, I hope you can all find time to get out close to where you live and experience some relief from the pressures of day-to-day life in these unprecedented times.
