LISTEN: Meet the Nairn mapmaker taking his passion in a new direction

Steve Smirthwaite is an orienteer and mapmaker who lives in Nairn. He has been making maps for mountain bikers and other outdoor enthusiasts for years, helping them discover new places to explore across the Highlands.

Following on from a new format map covering Badenoch and Strathspey, his new Trailmap extends that area across West Moray, Nairn and Dava.

I spoke to Steve on a short bike ride to a viewpoint over the River Findhorn, where we chatted about his maps, access to the hills and moors and everything else ‘outdoors’!
