ROSS County kicked off their Betfred Cup campaign with a 2-0 win against League One visitors Alloa Athletic this afternoon (Saturday).
A Marcus Fraser volley just before half-time was added to be a Craig Curran strike to get the Dingwall team off and running.
The League One Wasps killed County off last season with a 3-2 defeat which saw the Staggies end third in their group.
Home manager Jim McIntyre spoke this week of being embarrassed, as the 2015 winners, to have made such an early exit from the competition and he was keen to see his side start off with a victory in Group D which also contains Hibernian, Arbroath and Montrose.
The good news for County fans ahead of the game was the striker Curran, who didn't make the pre-season trip to La Manga in Spain last week, was back after the head knock he suffered a fortnight ago at Elgin City.
It took a while to spark into life in a well matched opening and the first chance of note came on 23 minutes when former St Mirren defender Sean Kelly drilled a 25-yard free-kick wide of the right post.
County captain Andrew Davies then headed over the top after Alloa keeper Craig McDowall turned an in-swinging Michael Gardyne corner kick around the post.
The breakthrough came five minutes before the break and it was a cracker to get the season up and running as defender Fraser lashed a volley into the top right-hand corner when he met a Gardyne corner.
Allo started the second half on the front foot, but the next decent chance came when McDowall saved a close-range header from Alex Schalk.
The killer goal to stun the Wasps came on 69 minutes when Curran finished at the second attempt after McDowall blocked his first shot.
In the other game in this section today, Premiership returners Hibernian beat League Two Montrose 4-0 at Easter Road.
On Tuesday, County head to Montrose, while Alloa are home to Arbroath and Hibs are idle.
