FORMER Highland Council leader Drew Hendry has announced his resignation as councillor for Aird and Loch Ness following his election as an MP.
The local authority is expected to call a by-election within the next three months and Mr Hendry will continue with his case work until an official handover takes place.
He thanked his constituents after eight years in office and will now focus solely on his role in Westminster.
"The person who will replace me will be very lucky to have the opportunity to work with the people of this ward, which is the size of Luxembourg," he said.
"I will do everything necessary for a smooth transition once a replacement has been voted in."
Highland Council said a by-election will be held in due course to decide Mr Hendry's successor. No date has yet been decided.
