COUNCILLORS have approved amended plans for 16 new homes close to the Culloden Battlefield site.
Permission for properties at Viewhill had been previously granted by Scottish Government planners in 2014.
However, changes to the design and layout of the homes followed the transfer of the site to new owners and councillors had earlier deferred a decision on Kirkwood Homes' plans to give the developer time to come back with designs more sensitive to the surrounding area.
Barred from rejecting the new application outright due to the fact it had already been approved by the Scottish Government, there had been speculation that councillors would simply decided to defer it every time it came before them.
At the south planning applications committee today, however, the plans were approved by five votes to three.
Campaigners opposed to the scheme had argued that the area forms part of the historic battlefield and as such was not appropriate for such development.
