A COMMUNITY is up in arms after a van load of rubbish was dumped at the side of a scenic country road.

Angry locals took photographs of the fly-tipped mess near Whiteness, on the road to Ardersier, and posted it online.

The incident has also been reported to police.

Cawdor resident Graeme Ross said he posted pictures to raise awareness and shame who had vandalised the area.

He believes it may have been the work of a handyman who was paid to dispose of the rubbish properly but instead decided to dump it and pocket the cash for himself.

“How these people have the hard neck just to dump anywhere they want is disgraceful,” he said.

“The sad thing is, the individuals were maybe getting rid of the rubbish in good faith. They probably could have put the rubbish in their wheelie bin over a period of a few weeks.”

There is also concern that as the rubbish is visible, others may get the same idea and add their junk to the pile.

Councillor Trish Robertson, who represents Culloden and Ardersier, said: “I think it happens quite a lot. People seem to think that they can dump their rubbish wherever.”

She added the problem was widespread, but could only be combatted if people reported it to the local authority.

She said: “If people find dumped rubbish they should send the pictures to the council. If they report it then the council will report it, but that is all that we can do about it.”

Resident Paul Hibberd said: “Local authorities and agencies have to spend thousands clearing this sort of thing up – wasted money that could have gone on much-needed local services.”

The council can issue fines – £80 if someone is caught dropping litter and from £200 to £20,000 for fly-tipping waste.

The offender could also face six months in prison or up to five years if hazardous waste is dumped.
