Plans for Sunday opening in run-up to Christmas 1980 spark protests

IC 200, Inverness Courier

CHURCH leaders protested strongly after the Inverness Woolworth store announced plans for Sunday opening in the run-up to Christmas.

It said it intended to open between 10am and 5.30pm on three consecutive Sundays to cater for the needs of Christmas shoppers and was in line with other branches throughout Scotland. If the initiative proved to be a success, the store would also consider extending Sunday opening to the tourist season.

But the leaders of the Church of Scotland and the Free Churches deplored the decision as an encroachment on Highland ways and Sabbath observance.
