CONCERNS over the thousands of lost jobs in the oil fabrication industry at McDermott's in Ardersier and Highland Fabricators in Nigg were raised with Prime Minister John Major during a whistle-stop tour of the area.

Mr Major and his wife, Norma, accompanied by Scottish Secretary Ian Lang, met a range of business representatives during the visit in September.

They heard about the opportunities and difficulties facing the region when they met Highlands and Islands Enterprise chairman Fraser Morrison and chief executive Iain Robertson at HIE's headquarters in Inverness.

The visit included a link-up with Western Isles Enterprise in Stornoway via a videophone at the start of which he was greeted in Gaelic.
