Highlanders chose Nationalist in 1979 European Parliamentary election

VOTERS in the Highlands and Islands confounded the pundits by backing SNP candidate Winnie Ewing in the first direct elections to the European Assembly held in June.

Mrs Ewing, who had lost her Moray and Nairn seat in the Westminster election just weeks previously, secured 39,991 votes – a 3882 majority over Liberal candidate Russell Johnston. Many had predicted Mr Johnston, who was also the Inverness MP, would emerge the victor.

Turnout in the region was 39.1 per cent which although not overwhelming was the highest in the country.
