THE MacKenzie Centre opened its doors for its first official housewarming in October.

Built at a cost of £468,000 in the grounds of the Hedgefield Hostel for Girls in Culduthel Road, it was the town's first day care centre for the elderly.

Chief guest was Tom MacKenzie in whose honour it was named as testimony to his lifetime's connections and contributions to the area's social work services.

Also present was the Minister for Health and Social Work at the Scottish Office, John MacKay, who said it would provide the necessary support and care for elderly people plus opportunities to remain active in the community.

A key aspect was that it would serve to reinforce a sense of independence gained through maintaining a home while drawing on the support of a wider group of friends and acquaintances.
