Council sets new record in 1974 to discuss quandary over construction of Eden Court Theatre

IC 200, Inverness Courier

INVERNESS Town Council sat late into the night in January to discuss the dilemma which had arisen over the building of Eden Court Theatre.

Work had begun on the project when Provost William Smith cut the first sod on May 10, 1973.

But as work progressed, the steel contractors went bankrupt leaving the council with the urgent task of finding another contractor to avoid costly delays.

Councillor James Cameron unsuccessfully moved that the matter be discussed in public as there had been too much talk behind closed doors about the project which was costing the town over £1 million.

But Provost Smith insisted some matters had to be discussed in private. Shortly before 10pm they went into private session, emerging at 11.30pm.

The theatre opened on April 15, 1976.
