Controversial Beauly to Denny power line goes live in 2013

IC 200, Inverness Courier

THE first section of the 137-mile upgraded Beauly to Denny power line was switched on in July.

The stretch between Beauly and Fort Augustus is the first part of the 400,000 volt transmission circuit to be electrified two-and-a-half years after being given the go-ahead by the Scottish Government following a public inquiry.

The project, which tripled the capacity of the existing system, included 600 towers – a reduction of 200 on the previous number – although some were taller, reaching heights of up to 213ft.

Opponents maintained the structures would spoil the landscape but Scottish and Southern Energy maintained the project was essential to carry renewable energy generated in the Highlands and Islands to markets in the south.
