THE arrival of the Royal Highland Fusiliers at Fort George near Ardersier in May marked the return of regular troops for the first time in years.
The battalion, accompanied by 240 families, had been based overseas for almost eight years, including four years in Germany. Some of the wives and children were visiting the UK for the first time.
The 220-year-old fort had been modernised in preparation for the battalion's arrival. It included the installation of fluorescent lighting and a dunlopillo mattress for every soldier.
Plans were also in hand to provide 62 houses at Lochardil, Raigmore and Muirtown, with another 75 families being housed in four and six-berth caravans at Cameron Barracks. Another 56 houses were to be built at Nairn.
