Highland Boxing Academy athletes Robert Stewart and Brodie Black both secured Northern District titles last Saturday at the Sheddocksley Community Centre in Aberdeen.

Stewart originally entered the competition at 54kg, but with nobody else to face at that weight the HBA boxer chose to step up in weight to 57kg for a shot at the Northern District Open Class title.

Although potentially at a disadvantage as a smaller fighter at the weight, Stewart looked strong over the three rounds against Jake Fyfe (Insch Boxing Club).

Stewart scored significant shots over three rounds, which built up his advantage on the judges’ scorecards despite a coming together in the second round which led to a point deduction for Stewart.

Possibly conscious of that, Stewart took no chances in the third round, landing with a devastating combination which sent Fyfe’s gum guard across the ring and forced the referee to give the Insch boxer a standing count.

After three rounds then, it was Stewart who had his hand raised to be declared the winner – and in doing so secured his second title for Highland Boxing Academy this season.

Brodie Black, meanwhile, faced clubmate Ethan Hoult in the 50kg Northern District final.

The pair were both very familiar with each other prior to the final, having spent a considerable amount of time in and out of the gym training together.

This didn't stop the duo putting on a highly competitive final which drew one of the busiest crowds of spectators on the day.

In the end, Black did enough in rounds two and three to take the decision and secure the Northern District title.

HBA's Alexander Russell cruised into a final of his own after an impressive unanimous decision win over Jacob Crighton (Lochee BC), earning a title fight against Kai Wigton, who also boxes for Lochee BC.

That final will take place during HBA’s home show on Saturday, May 18 at the Inverness Ice Centre.

Despite a strong performance, HBA's Henry Leitch fell short of reaching the final losing out to Kodie Thom (Cain)️, while HBA's Ralf Mihalkins got one stage further but narrowly missed out on gold, losing his final on a split decision.
