Aidan and Ciaran Lennan overcame family bereavement to become multi-time Scottish champions last weekend.

The Charleston Academy teenagers travelled to Edinburgh for the first WAKO Scottish Open since before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, having gone through a tough spell in the lead up to the competition with the death of their uncle at the end of March.

Spurred on to do their uncle proud, though, Aidan and Ciaran won seven gold medals between them at the Meadowbank Sports Centre.

Elder brother Aidan claimed the national title in the junior and senior under-63kg points fighting, junior light contact and senior kick light competitions.

Aidan Lennan won four separate titles at the WAKO Scottish Open 2024.

He had actually entered two more competitions too, his opponent in the junior kick light tournament pulled out and there were no other entries in the senior light contact group.

Younger brother Ciaran, in the under-47kg categories, won gold in the older cadet points, light contact and kick light competitions.

He also moved up to the higher under-52kg weight, winning bronze in the points competition.

Aidan wrote on social media: “This one was for you uncle Gavin. A very emotional three weeks – you will always be in our hearts.”

Ciaran also posted: “I dedicate these (medals) to you uncle Gavin. (I) will miss you forever.”

Mum Diane commented: “I am always very proud of both boys, but this time with everything going on and how they fought and how they have dealt with the things I’m extra super proud of them – and I’m sure their uncle would be too.”

The brothers train out of HMAC Inverness under coaches Ross Houston and Reece Stewart, as well as HESA Inverness and at Wolfpack Martial Arts under Kevin Baldwin.

With Aidan now starting his higher exams at school, the boys’ next outing will be in May at the WAKO GB International Open in Nottingham.
