Police said the woman pulled from the River Nairn on Sunday was a 64-year-old from the town.

The death of the woman, who has not been named, is being treated as unexplained by officers though there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

On Sunday police appealed for information to find out the woman's identity after she was recovered from the water opposite a caravan park on Shambles Road at around 8.55am.

A police spokesman said: "With reference to our appeal for information to help identify the woman who was recovered from the River Nairn, near the harbour on Sunday, December 8, please note the woman has now been identified as a 64 year-old woman from Nairn and her relatives have been informed of the death.

"A post mortem will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death, however at this time the death is being treated as unexplained, although there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

"Members of the public are thanked for their response to our appeal."
