SEIZURES of weapons and class A drugs have soared at Inverness Prison, according to figures received by the Highland News.

The statistics revealed today for ageing Porterfield Prison have angered union leaders who claim officers’ lives are in danger because of understaffing and overcrowding.

According to the data, obtained using the Freedom of Information Act, seizures of narcotics, weapons and mobile phones have all risen in the past five years.

Since August 2014 the number of seizures of illegal drugs has almost trebled, and there has been a four-fold increase in the number of makeshift weapons confiscated.
