A popular festival is returning to Inverness this summer with two months of live music, DJ sets and special events.

Eden Court’s flagship summer festival Under Canvas is returning for its sixth year, from July 3 to August 24.

Tickets go on sale at midday today (Thursday, May 9) for the music festival, which takes place in the stretch tents on Eden Court’s front lawn.

Street food and local beer, gin and whisky will be available for festivalgoers to enjoy from the outdoor pop-up shacks.

Susannah Armitage, Eden Court’s Senior Producer, said: “We are excited to celebrate the sixth year of Under Canvas with a brilliant mix of returning artists like Hannah Rarity, Laura Wilkie and Gnoss, and new acts such as Juliette Lemoine, Chris Amer, Dàimh and Django with The Already in Berlin Band.

“We are embracing an even wider range of genres than ever before and have new special events incorporating poetry and spoken word, Saturday Spotlights, as well as the return of our popular silent disco and family events. All accompanied by local food and drink and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.”

Under Canvas first launched in 2018, showcasing Scottish traditional and folk music, and was nominated for Event of the Year at the 2019 MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.

Since its debut, the festival has grown to feature a blend of genres alongside its trad and folk offering, making it a popular summer destination for locals and tourists in the Highlands.

This year’s Under Canvas will provide paid employment opportunities to over 200 artists, with a programme of trad, folk and contemporary music from Wednesday to Friday each week.

Highlights for this summer’s lineup include Anna Massie, Laura Wilkie, Josie Duncan, Gnoss and Sian. The Saturday Spotlight sessions will shine a light on Highland-based musicians including MACGILLI, Myfanwy Morgan and Teya-Jean Bawden. Resident DJs Karawane will appear on select Saturday nights to transform Eden Court’s lawn into a world music dancefloor. Each week closes with Sunday Sessions from an eclectic mix of artists including Evie Waddell, Scott C. Park, Liam Ross and Michael McGovern.

Special events at this year’s festival include a day of silent discos in July, with a family-friendly option during the day and a night-time session for those looking to party. The hugely popular Family Fun Day will return on Saturday 17 August with entertainment and activities for all ages. Eden Court will also be collaborating with Tobar an Dualchais / Kist O’ Riches on ‘Sgrìobh – Scrieve’, an event showcasing two new song commissions in Gaelic and Scots, alongside poetry from Marcas Mac an Tuairneir. There will be a special festival edition of Eden Court’s series of Gaelic Acoustic Nights called ‘Cruinn Còmhla - Thegither’, featuring Gaelic and Scots music from Claire Frances NicNìll and Ellie Beaton.

To make the festival as sustainable as possible, food and drinks will be served in packaging that can be completely hot composted, and the event will not use electric heaters.

This year’s festival is supported by Stage Sponsor Fraser Elite and Bar Sponsor Tomatin Distillery, both returning to Under Canvas for a second year.
