Sir, The letter (Inverness Courier, 31st March) from Edinburgh-based Lib DEm Alan Macrae, who uses a Dingwall accommodation address, highlights his lack of understanding of local issues.

The Highlands and Islands Local Food Network (HILFN) was suspended from 1st April partly because it had not managed to become self-sustaining and, I believe, there were also other issues of concern about its operation. It had nothing whatever to do with HIE's policy or budget.

I am also certain that support for local food producers and groups will be forthcoming on a sustainable basis and look forward to positive action in this respect.

As far as support for small businesses is concerned, that is now the function of Highland Council through the business gateway to be operated by their own company, Highland Opportunity. The budget for this was transferred from HIE to the Council on 1st April and I am sure that it will operate very effectively.
