Sir, The new Aldi store opened its doors for trading recently. We have good expectations for the latest store to come to Inverness. However, the first thing to meet the eye was the store's Specialbuy magazine with the sub-heading "Special buys every Sunday and Thursday".

So the first thing to welcome the Inverness shopper is that Aldi wishes to promote shopping on the Lord's Day.

Why did they choose this day for their special buys? Possibly it was a business decision seeking a competitive edge — but did their market researchers think of telling them that this will alienate many Christians in the Highlands?

Hopefully it was an oversight rather than a calculated risk assessment that they would gain more shoppers on the Lord's Day than the Christians they would lose.

If their researchers missed this obvious point for consideration, the Scottish Christian Party advises that there are many Christians in Inverness who will not visit the store on the Lord's Day and "special buys" on that day will not entice them but may rather alienate them altogether.

We welcome the Aldi store to the city of Inverness and we encourage its management to reconsider this decision.

Dr Donald Boyd, Highlands and Islands Office, Scottish Christian Party, 33 Wells Street, Inverness
