Sir, My wife spent a frustrating 20 minutes looking for a car parking space today at Raigmore Hospital in order to visit her 87-year-old mother who was rushed in with a heart problem.

Whilst there she overheard another visitor boast that she had just saved £45 in parking fees. She smugly stated that she had been on holiday in Spain for a month and, rather than pay parking charges at Inverness Airport, had left her car for £1 in the hospital car park and taken the airport bus both ways, making a big saving. I really hope she reads this. I really hope she has boasted to all her friends and they read this. The sad thing is that in addition to Raigmmore Hospital potentially losing an estimated £600,000 a year in parking charges when the Scottish Government forces the hospital to abandon charges altogether, this type of inconsiderate abuse looks set to increase. What could be done about this? How about "charging" everybody £5 or even £25 to go into the car park and only those who obtain a legitimate "pass out" from authorised hospital personnel would be able to redeem their fee. That means it it would still be free to legitimate users but penalise the scroungers. Ken Mackinnon, 60 Moraypark Terrace, Culloden, Inverness |
