Veterinary staff from the Scottish Agricultural College in Inverness are now at the scene and will carry out tests on the beach.
Sperm whales are normally at home in the North Sea and deep waters off the west coast of Scotland.
Experts think the animal was sick and may have come into the shallow waters of the Moray Firth to die.
The task of disposing of the adult male carcass will get underway later this week.
