Thousands taken in cinema hole-in-the-wall raid
Published:  26 February, 2008

INVERNESS police are awaiting results of forensic tests taken at the scene of a robbery — believed to have involved the theft of thousands of pounds — from a cash machine at the city's Vue cinema.

The cinema was closed for several hours on Saturday so police could carry out examinations. Some of the evidence was sent to a laboratory in Aberdeen for further tests.

Northern Constabulary is also contacting every police force in the UK to explore the possible links with other raids and see whether the cinema chain has been targeted before. Officers are also examining CCTV footage.

Although one witness has come forward, police are still appealing to anyone with information about the incident on the Inverness Business and Retail Park, in the early hours of Saturday.

They would not reveal how much money had been stolen but said a considerable sum was involved and it is believed at least a large van-sized vehicle was used during the incident which happened after 1.30am.

Detective sergeant Peter Mackenzie added anyone with information from the days leading up to the crime should also contact police.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious a day or two before, just in case anyone was checking out the property beforehand," he said.

DS Mackenzie was confident the force could solve the case.

It is understood a hole near a side entrance was used to enter the building and an interior door to the main lobby was broken through.

The break-in was discovered at 7am, explained the cinema's general manager Alan Bell.

The building was closed until 2pm to allow for damage to be cleared away. "We offer our sincere apologies to disappointed customers, but we are now fully open for business again," he said.
