A RECORD entry of 239 crews was received for the two-day Inverness Fours and Small Boats Heads, which took place in variable weather conditions on the Caledonian Canal.

The Fours Head went ahead first in calm but showery conditions, while the following day's weather was much kinder for the athletes in the Small Boats Head with a light following wind and sunshine on the 4500m course.

Despite some strong competition from throughout Scotland, members of Inverness Rowing Club enjoyed success over both days of the competition.

Hazel Smith led a women's veteran coxed fours to success on the first day, but this was only the start for the city club, who won several events 24 hours later.

In the men's R2 double sculls, Roy Sinclair was part of a successful Inverness/Glasgow Rowing Club composite, while there were wins for Tom Baker and John Sharkey in the veteran double sculls and coxless pairs respectively.

Smith was able to celebrate another victory, this time in the veteran double sculls, and Mary Clouston also triumphed in the veteran single sculls.

Inverness also proved themselves to be strong at women's junior level with Rachael Wells winning the junior 16 single sculls and Kirsty Guild taking the junior 16 double sculls, while a composite Inverness/St Andrews crew finished first in the junior 18 double sculls.

Prior to the Fours Head taking place, 44 crews competed in the Scottish Rowing Long Distance Time Trial, which took place over the longer 5000m course.

Former Inverness Rowing Club member Imogen Walsh, who is now at Clyde Rowing Club, posted a time of 21 minutes 37 seconds to claim first place in the women's lightweight single sculls.
