Glen retain MacDonald Cup

ShintyGLENURQUHART retained the MacDonald Cup with a comprehensive 5-0 defeat of old rivals Strathglass at Cannich on Saturday.

There was not to be a dream return to the home dugout for Robert Geddes with his side no match for the Glen, who powered their way to victory on a heavy pitch.

Glenurquhart had the match in bag by half-time with goals from Neale Reid, John Barr and Andy Corrigan. Second half strikes by Ruairidh Cameron and Lewis MacLennan completed the victory.

The reserve sides failed to score in the Ally Bhan match, allowing the Glen to retain the trophy as holders.

Inverness experienced disappointment when they relinquished the Robert Wylie trophy on Saturday losing in a penalty shootout to Oban Celtic after the teams finished in a 2-2 stalemate following extra-time.

New signings Sorley MacDonald and Dougie Rankin were unavailable and Inverness travelled south with a squad someway short of their strongest.

Despite this, midfielder Craig Nicholson fired home in the 37th minute, but Lee Askew equalised for the hosts in the 44th minute.

In an even second half, David Hill put the home side in front in 65 minutes, yet Inverness were not be denied and Colin Fraser hit a last gasp equaliser to send the match into an additional 30 minutes.

That failed to separate the teams, however, and it was left to Hill to score the winner in a sudden death shootout to take the trophy home after Inverness snatched it last year with a 4-3 win.

In other friendlies, Lovat were held 1 - 1 at home by North Division One title hopefuls Lochaber, Greg Matheson equalising for the hosts after Sean Nicholson had given them the lead.

An understrength Caberfeidh side were thumped 6 - 0 by Kingussie at the Dell. Former Strathglass frontman Lee Bain hit a hat trick. Further goals from Martin Dallas (two) and Craig Dawson completed the rout.

Skye also went down to a heavy defeat, losing 4-0 at home to Premier Division champions Newtonmore in Portree.
