MALCOLM Sutherland might be a busy man as race director of the forthcoming Inverness Half Marathon, but he can still afford himself a smile at the work done so far.
The securing of a very well-known race sponsor, a four-figure prize for the winner of the men’s and women’s races in the main event, the addition of a new team challenge and entry levels outstripping what they were this time 12 months ago, Sutherland and his team at Caledonian Concepts have every reason to feel pleased.
Much work is still to be done in anticipation of the half marathon, which takes place on Sunday 11th March with the Global Energy Group as title sponsors, but if efforts so far are anything to go by then the event itself promises to be another great occasion for the Highland Capital.
"Preparations are going well," said Sutherland, regarding the half marathon, which is now in its 27th year. "We are looking at every aspect of enhancing the quality and experience of the event for everyone taking part.
"It is looking like we’ll have a record entry for the half marathon, while we have also seen great interest for the 5K Fun Run and the new 5K Team Attack events.
"Having Global Energy on board is also significant and their efforts can only help to make this year’s half marathon one to remember."
Last year, 1670 took part in the half marathon, which is being supported by The Inverness Courier, while 960 participated in the 5K Fun Run, but Sutherland insists the figures this year will be "well beyond that".
The attraction of a £1000 first prize for the winners of both the men’s and women’s races is an added incentive, but Sutherland insists the event appeals because it is all-inclusive, no matter what age and ability you are.
"The half marathon itself is for seasoned runners, but you get a good mix in the 5K Fun Run where many enter just because it is a fun experience," he said.
"We like to think that the event offers something for everyone.
"Also with it being in early March then it can kickstart the year for many runners. It gives them something to focus on, while others see it as a way of getting fit.
"The Team Attack event is new, but already we’ve seen a few business from around the area and even up north registering their interest.
"I think most people who take part will see it as a bit of friendly competition and rivalry between company’s.
"It’s also a good chance for people who only see each other in the office to get together outside work and train for an event like this, so I’m sure this will prove popular."
Entry for all events is currently open and that remains the case until Wednesday 22nd February, but with increased levels set to take part this year, Sutherland is encouraging this that have not already done so to get their entries in as soon as possible.
"There’s just under three weeks to go, but some people still leave it until the last minute to get their entry form in," he said.
"However, if you have not entered, but are planning to, then please do so as quickly as you can because if you miss the deadline then that’s it."
