Traffic eases as swing bridge fixed at Tomnahurich

Traffic Scotland says disruption is easing in Inverness after Tomnahurich canal swingbridge, which was stuck open, is now fixed.

Access to A82 had been by the Muirtown bridge and General Booth Road.

A spokesperson for Scottish Canals said: “The unusually warm weather seems to have resulted in some of the metal components of the Tomnahurich Bridge expanding, causing the bridge to stick open.

“We have a maintenance team onsite pumping water onto the structure in a bid to cool the metal down enough to allow the bridge to close, with the fire brigade also providing assistance.

During the incident the canal authority did not open Muirtown Swing Bridge – which is the alternate route – while Tomnahurich was out of commission.
