A WOMAN who died in a fire at her flat in Hilton has been named.
Barbara Anderson (51), of Leyton Drive, was a courts and warrants assistant for Northern Constabulary from 1979 to 2011, before taking early retirement.
Fire crews were called to Ms Anderson's flat at 7.45am on Tuesday and found the former typist, who used a wheelchair. Neighbours were evacuated at the time as a precaution.
Chief Superintendent Julian Innes paid tribute to Ms Anderson's years of service with the force.
"Barbara, or 'Babs' as she was affectionately known, worked with us for many years as an extremely committed and loyal member of staff," he said.
"Over the years she was with us she enjoyed the respect, friendship and admiration of a great number of colleagues both past and present.
"Barbara had to overcome a number of challenges in life but she did so with an optimism and cheerfulness that was an inspiration to us all."
Police Scotland are continuing to investigate the circumstances and the cause of the fire, although at this time there are no suspicious circumstances.
