THIRTY five firefighters are tackling a blaze at an Inverness backpackers' hostel.

The alarm was raised just after 5am at the building in Eastgate.

Fifty-one people - some of them in their nightclothes - had to flee the Eastgate Backpackers Hostel as the flames took hold.

They were given shelter at the nearby Eastgate Centre, and are now at the Spectrum Centre.

Nobody has been injured and everyone has been accounted for.

The fire is now in the process of being fully extinguished.

The High Street is closed from Stephen's Brae/Inglis Street to Crown Road. Businesses in the Eastgate Shopping Centre are open.

Two fire appliances from Inverness were initially dispatched, followed by an aerial appliance. Firefighters from Beauly, Dingwall and Nairn were quickly on the scene to support the Inverness crews.

"Thirty five firefighters from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance, they are working closely with colleagues from Police Scotland to ensure the incident is brought to a successful conclusion," said area manager Billy Wilson. "There are no reports of any casualties."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.
