Two brave volunteers raised £1500 for the Raigmore Children’s Ward Appeal after submitting to the painful ordeal of having their chests waxed.

Munlochy oil worker Dave Nicol — dubbed the "Hairy Highlander" by colleagues in Khazakhstan — bared his chest along with John O’Connor, who accepted a dare by workmates at the Tesco Inshes store.

The wax-a-thon, carried out by Angela Urquhart, of Beauty Spot, in Culloden, took place during a day-long health and lifestyle event at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness which in total raised about £1700.

The event was also used to issue an invitation to the public to join in a one million-metre rowing challenge taking place over three days next month.

It will take place around the clock from 25th to 27th February in the city’s Eastgate Centre.

Allana Mackay, the appeal’s fund raising manager, hopes as many people as possible will sign up beforehand to use one of the four rowing machines in the centre.

"They will be allocated either a 15 or 30 minute slot — or just as many metres as they can do," she explained.

"We are not asking people to get sponsors but will be issuing donation sheets to businesses and individuals who register and we will be collecting throughout the three days as well."

Appeal chairman David Sutherland will kick off the challenge while the final slot will be taken by Inverness personal trainer Jamie Tulloch, who also had a stand at the health and lifestyle event.

Other attractions included stalls offering products and services such as boot camps, spa products, teeth whitening, gluten-free cakes, mini-facials and hand massages, restyling your wardrobe and ionic bands.

The Inverness Courier also had a stand selling its City Saver book. The book contains more than 200 discount vouchers for local businesses and, for each copy sold, £5 will go towards the £1 million fund-raising appeal.

Launched by the ARCHIE Foundation in conjunction with the Inverness Courier, the aim is to create a more family-friendly and child-centred children’s
