IN this week’s On My Doorstep feature, Eastgate Shopping Centre manager Jackie Cuddy tells why Nessie is her favourite

How long have you lived/did you live in the Inverness area?

Just over seven years when I was asked to take over the management of the Eastgate Centre following the retirement of Captain Milne.

Best thing about living here?

Being so close to beaches and such beautiful scenery. Birmingham where I lived before is the farthest point from any coastline in the UK.

Worst thing about living here?

Moving from a big city I found it a little like working and living in a goldfish bowl initially.

One thing you would change about Inverness.

I would like to see better development of the areas around one of our greatest assets — the River Ness as it runs through the city.

Your favourite walk/cycle ride.

There is a fantastic walk as you come out of Drumnadrochit. As you climb higher the views are amazing and, on a clear day, you can see Ben Nevis. I was fortunate to do this on a clear bright October day when we were all mesmerised by the views. Always good to pop into The Fiddlers for a wee dram afterwards.

Describe your ideal Inverness weekend.

Saturday morning off to body pump class then watch Caley Thistle win at home followed by a meal at Cinnamon Restaurant (which has to be the best Indian in Inverness). Sunday morning, laze around with the papers then off for a refreshing walk either at Embo or Brora.

Where would you take a first time visitor to the area?

Chanonry Point or Embo beach.

Where’s the best place for a first date?

Pass . . . what’s one of those?!

Favourite local restaurant?

Ooh! They are all so good and there is so much more choice than I ever thought there would be. The first restaurant I visited in the city was Cafe 1 and it still remains high up in my favourites.

Favourite shop?

Anywhere in the Eastgate Centre. I am known as a bit of a Phase Eight girl in particular though.

Your favourite local building, and why.

The Town House because it is so steeped in history.

Who is your favourite Invernessian, past or present, and why?

Nessie because she has done so much to put Inverness on the map.

What is the area’s best kept secret?

The many cottage industries offering unique local arts and crafts.

How do you think Inverness is perceived by the rest of Britain?

Quite often as the back of beyond. I am sure some people don’t think we even have electricity. I have to admit I thought we would be up and down the road with a van for major purchases until I came up here. In the early days this was a constant battle with potential retailers we were trying to attract to the centre. I have noticed a change in people’s perceptions though over the last few years which is shown in some of the lettings we have done this year to national companies.

How would you describe Inverness in a sentence?

Possibly one of the most beautiful places to live where you can experience all seasons in one day!
