THIS year is the year of the 'staycation' and it is clear why; people want to get the most from their money and without blowing a huge part of your budget on long-haul flights, you can enjoy luxury in Britain with a little cash left over.
So, what parts of the UK should you visit?
Liverpool is fast becoming a great holiday destination so set a trend this summer and explore a city known for its maritime history, musical past and of course its famous football team. With excellent shopping, trendy restaurants and wine bars and a wealth of culture, Liverpool has something for everyone. The friendly atmosphere might strike you as put on but it isn't, Liverpudlians are famously welcoming and are proud of their city.
Hotels in Liverpool are great value for money; if you save money on flights go all out on your hotel and book somewhere that is ridiculously decadent, the Thistle Atlantic Tower Hotel is just that. Ideally placed in the city centre, this hotel is warm with a friendly staff and all the facilities you ever need to make your stay one to remember. Near the waterfront you can look out on the docks and in the evening enjoy a dinner at one of the restaurants or go for a drink at one of the lounge bars.
Another wonderful city to visit is Brighton; everyone who visits the city has good things to say about this vibrant part of the country. Rent a bike and go for a cycle or get a swim suit on and chill at the beach. From its iconic tourist attractions, the Royal Pavilion and Palace Pier to its sensational beach front, Brighton epitomises 'cool Britannia'.
Brighton is a colourful city with so much to do here; the best thing is most of it is free. Why not check out the museum at the Royal Pavilion and the Victorian aquarium? Those who think life is a beach can amble along the pier or look for shells and stones along the shoreline. A tranquil city by day and a lively hotspot by night, Brighton has a lot of green spaces and is a great place to bring your family for a full day of fun in the sun.
Once you've finished on the beach then head to the famous Lanes or to one of many shopping arcades in the city to bag yourself a bargain! Hotelclub accommodation in Brighton is known for its quality and comfort; the De Vere Grand Hotel is perfect if you are planning a romantic escape. Offering sea views, each room is kitted out with fabulous furnishings and designer fabrics. Treat yourself and enjoy the city in style!
Last but by no means least, what trip in the UK would be complete without seeing its capital? London is a beautiful city with so many free activities you won't know what to do first. Rather, decide the things you really want to do and savour them. Whether you want to check out Buckingham Palace or see the Houses of Parliament, make sure you bring your camera with you.
A great idea for families is a canal boat trip along Regent's Canal. Known as 'Little Venice', the canal trip takes you through Regent's Park to Camden lock. Those that like to party can also book a canal boat called 'Dusk 'til Dawn' for private events. There are lots of 5-star London hotels, and they don't all have to cost the earth. Whether you are saving money on flights and planning a 'staycation' or coming from far away, the hotel you stay in can make or break your trip.
If you are feeling truly luxurious and don't mind spending a bit more then book the Ritz for timeless glamour; referred to as the world's greatest hotel 'as conceived by the world's greatest hotelier' the Ritz has it all.
American holidaymakers have always been advised to 'see America first' because too many Americans never see the wonders of their own country. Perhaps it is time we in Britain took that advice to heart: 'see Britain first.'
